Description:
The GRESINT project aims to take a step further in the innovation and transformation of waste management by incorporating digitization through intelligent technologies that improve the waste packaging sorting process and have a direct or indirect impact on all processes in the integral cycle of municipal waste management (collection, sorting, recycling, and valorization).

The transformation of the waste management process involves a greater use of digital and intelligent technologies. The introduction of sensors, data processing, and the integration of vision and artificial intelligence, supported by robotic classifiers, are capable of generating and processing information about the selected materials, allowing for anticipation and better decision-making.

These technologies are rapidly spreading across Europe with the goal of optimizing waste sorting and significantly improving the quality and accuracy for subsequent recycling and valorization. The Euroregion does not want to and cannot lag behind in its implementation.

The project is composed of SOGAMA and LIPOR, entities with expertise in municipal waste management on both sides of the border, which will incorporate digitization and intelligent technologies into their facilities. It also involves universities and technological centers that will guide them through the process, UDC and UBI. The stage where pilot projects will be implemented is the sorting stage, which would help achieve the new recycling objectives set at both the European and national levels through digital transformation, which can revolutionize the way this sorting is done, increasing efficiency, quality, and circularity.

GRESINT is structured into 6 activities, 4 technical and 2 cross-cutting, which include the following actions:
1. Development of a Digitalization Agenda for the waste management process.
2. Joint artificial intelligence platform, covering both the functional design process, data collection, and operational development.
3. Application of digitalization technologies through three defined pilot projects, replicable on both sides of the border.
4. Virtual technology awareness classroom.
5. Management and Coordination.
6. Visibility, Transparency, and Communication.
